Mey Village Hall Project - News and Events at Mey Village Hall, Caithness

Job Opportunity – Hall Co-ordinator

Mey Village Hall is working with the Canisbay & Dunnet Day Care Centre Group to explore how services and activities for old and young in the area can be improved. Together, the 2 organisations have carried out a study to look at different options and have agreed to progress with a proposal to base activity at Mey Village Hall. This will involve extending the hall to provide spaces that meet the needs of the whole community. This is being taken forward through an application to the Big Lottery.

In due course the project would see Mey Hall provide, in addition to and integrated with the current clubs, activities and events using the hall:

  • a drop in café open to all;
  • specific sessions at the café where people are encouraged to attend with their carers;
  • seasonal activity programmes modelled on High Life Highland’s You Time with a mix of fitness based and other activities aimed at adults of different abilities and interests;
  • an extended range of clubs bringing together people who want to continue with an activity from a seasonal programme (e.g. local history, family history, gardening, art, crafts, woodwork);
  • performances and music events which will bring the whole community together;
  • space for regular visiting services such as hairdressing and chiropody;
  • information resources and events to raise awareness of e.g. health issues, healthy eating, benefits, etc.;
  • a base for a health walking group;
  • a centre to extend the take up of the home visiting service provided through Befriending Caithness;
  • taking over the housebound library service in the area;
  • a voluntary transport service bringing people with access issues to the hall.

Much of that activity will be based on voluntary input and on working with other organisations and partners such as the NHS, Step it Up Highland, Citizens Online, Befrienders Caithness and High Life Highland.

Responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to:

  •  develop links with potential partners such as the NHS, Step it Up Highland, Befriending Caithness, Citizens Online and High Life Highland;
  • develop and manage a pool of local volunteers;
  • co-ordinate all activity in the hall to ensure the needs of existing hall users and the whole community are taken into account in programming;
  • organise a programme of demonstration activities/classes for old and young with 4 different activities each run over 12 week periods;
  • organise a weekly drop in café session;
  • organise information sessions on healthy living;
  • liaise with services such as Befriending Caithness and the housebound library service on strengthening their services in the area.
