Story So Far
In March 2006 the Big Lottery Fund announced a grant of £249,000 for the Mey Village Hall project. This was great news for our community and more good news followed when Highland Council confirmed another grant, this time of £150,000.
Mey Hall belongs to the community and at a public meeting in 1995 it was decided that the building should be refurbished and extended. Subsequently, the committee launched a local fundraising campaign which was well supported and continued after it achieved the initial target of raising £20,000 in two years. An architect was engaged and plans for the refurbishment were drawn up with community consultation at every stage. Various designs were displayed in the village Post Office until the preferred layout was agreed.
When the project was launched a number of clubs and groups formed and the hall was in use almost every night of the week. This continued for some time until poor facilities and health and safety concerns meant all activities were forced to cease.
Applications were made to various lottery funds over the years but these were unsuccessful. The committee suspended its local fundraising when it became apparent that without funding from the lottery it was very unlikely the project could go ahead. Efforts were focused on making a successful application with the committee meeting only as and when it was necessary.
In October 2004 we hired a consultant who prepared and submitted what was to be our successful lottery application. We were awarded a grant from CASE to cover his fees. His involvement has been vital to our recent funding success and he has agreed to continue working on our project to secure the remaining funding which must be in place by mid September 2006. He is currently applying to CASE, Forward Scotland, Highland 2007 and several charitable trusts. The total project cost is £527,000.
